Great cafes in Bandung
Most travellers arrive in Bandung
by train and immediately head for the nearby hotels that surround the
smoggy, noisy and dirty station area. These shocking first impressions
of Bandung can lead one to believe that Bandung is nothing more than
just another big Indonesian metropolis with absolutely no redeeming features let alone a well-developed eating scene. But Bandung is Java’s culinary capital; those wishing to sample some delights from the cafes that locals like to frequent need look no further than these top spots.
Origin House & Kitchen
Perhaps the best cafe in Bandung, Origin is known for serving fantastic food tailored to those interested in their health. That’s not to say that Origin cuisine is light on flavour — quite the contrary. Dishes such as salmon fettucine, chicken solferino and a fabulous seasame-seed crusted rare tuna are all packed with loads of flavour and are good for you too. An added bonus at Origin is that the coffee is absolutely divine, the WiFi free and the fruit juices to die for.

Giggle Box
Giggle Box is the sort of place that university students love to gather at to nongkrong — an Indonesian word that loosely translates to “hang out”. They primarily come here because the WiFi is blazingly fast, the food is Westernised and the prices very budget friendly. One of the favourites from the menu is the chicken schnitzel, which will set you back 18,000 rupiah — don’t expect haute cuisine. This is cheap cafe food, pure and simple. The coffee here is average.

The Suga Rush
The Suga Rush is a newbie on the Bandung culinary scene and has quickly become known for its cakes and desserts. Located on the main tourist strip of Jalan Braga, Suga Rush is perfectly placed for those travellers wandering around looking for a bite to eat in the central area of town. The vibe of the cafe is upbeat and funky and caters to a younger crowd rather than families. Check out the churros for a real treat!

Hummingbird
Hummingbird is a wonderfully designed cafe located a short cab ride away from the centre part of town. This eatery attracts both young people awash with money and families searching for a delicious Western-styled meal and feels like a refuge of modernity when walking in from the street. The coffee here is some of the best in Bandung and the WiFi is free. Worth a look if you truly want a rest from Indonesian street food as this place is about as far away from that as you can get.
